By late afternoon, the words on your screen may look slightly less crisp than they did that morning. You blink harder, adjust the brightness, or step away to make coffee. The break helps, but the burning or blur returns soon after you sit down again.
Long periods of close work can leave your eyes feeling tired. Recurring discomfort, though, may also involve dry eye, a prescription change, cataracts, or another condition that screen adjustments will not address on their own.

Notice what happens away from the computer. Your eyes may burn while driving, blur while reading a printed page, or feel gritty shortly after you wake up. How dry eye can make vision feel tired and blurry
The front of the eye is covered by a thin tear film. It helps keep the surface comfortable and creates the smooth optical surface needed for clear vision.
Dry eye can develop when the eyes do not make enough tears, when tears evaporate too quickly, or when they do not function properly. Symptoms may include burning, scratching, redness, sensitivity to light, and blurry vision.
Screens can make those problems easier to notice. People tend to blink less often or less completely while concentrating on digital work. With more time between full blinks, the tear film can become unstable. Research reviews have found considerable overlap between prolonged screen use and dry-eye symptoms, particularly those associated with tear evaporation.
Dry eye does not always feel obviously dry. You might notice:
- burning or stinging;
- a sandy or gritty feeling;
- redness;
- sensitivity to light;
- watery eyes;
- vision that shifts between clear and blurry.
Watery eyes can be misleading. Irritation may trigger reflex tearing, but those tears do not always remain on the surface long enough to restore stable vision.
Blur that clears briefly after blinking is another useful observation. It does not identify the cause by itself, but it gives an eye doctor helpful information. Mention whether the problem becomes worse around air conditioning, heating, wind, contact lenses, or concentrated close work.
Artificial tears may be enough for mild, occasional discomfort. Cataracts can produce a different set of overlapping complaints. A cataract is a cloudy area in the eye’s natural lens. As it develops, vision may become blurry or hazy, colors may look faded, lights may seem too bright, and night driving may become more difficult. Some people notice halos or need frequent changes to their glasses or contact-lens prescription.
The change may first seem connected to a device. A bright monitor looks harsh, but then headlights and indoor lamps begin to bother you too. Reading on a phone feels tiring, yet the same thing happens with a menu or paperback book.
Glare or hazy vision alone cannot tell you whether cataracts are involved. Dry eye, corneal changes, and an outdated prescription may feel similar, which is why the pattern needs to be examined rather than guessed at.
Signs it is time to book an eye exam
You do not need an appointment every time your eyes feel tired after a demanding day. Try a few simple changes and see whether they make a meaningful difference.
Consider arranging an examination when:
- discomfort keeps returning despite breaks and a better screen setup;
- blur interferes with work, reading, driving, or hobbies;
- blinking clears your vision only briefly;
- eye drops provide inconsistent or short-lived relief;
