The famed beach in the movie “The Beach” is reopening on January 1, 2022. The project to return Maya Bay back into destination for tourists is intended to revitalize Thailand’s film industry with an influx of new visitors and tourism revenue.
The Thai government announced the reopening of Maya Bay on January 1, 2022. It has been closed to tourists since December 26th, 2018 due to a “man-made disaster” caused by the deadly tsunami in 2004 which claimed nearly 5,000 lives and destroyed more than 100 boats used for snorkeling and diving trips into the bay. People who were evacuated from surrounding regions will be able to return home as soon as possible.
The announcement that Thailand will reopen Maya Bay to tourists on January 1, 2022 is a welcome change. The beach was closed in the aftermath of the tsunami in 2004.
Thailand is a popular tourist destination and is regarded as a must-see place. Maya Bay is a lovely cove that is one of the country’s most well-known sights. In 2018, it closed its doors to begin a regeneration procedure for its destroyed corals. It was intended to give them a fresh lease of life. Thailand’s government has set a date for the reopening. The date has been set for January 1, 2022, according to Thailand’s Department of National Parks. Maya Bay, the lovely cove, was made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio’s film “The Beach,” which was released in 2000.
The renowned tourist location has been closed to visitors since June 2018 for reasons other than the Coronavirus outbreak, according to CNN. This virus claimed many lives throughout the globe and wreaked havoc on companies. To stay afloat, those in the tourism industry had to think outside the box. This was particularly true in nations where tourism was a major source of revenue. Thailand said in June that Phuket will reopen to holidaymakers. In Thailand’s Krabi province, there are two islands.
Maya Bay is situated in the Phi Phi Leh National Park, which is one of these islands. Prior to the shutdown of Maya Bay, this island was available to day-trip travelers due to its size. The bigger island of Phi Phi Don has a variety of budget and mid-range accommodations.

Maya Bay in Thailand was a popular day-trip destination prior to its closure.
After the worldwide popularity of “The Beach,” Thailand’s Maya Bay rose to fame. This was where several of the movie’s scenes were shot. CNN goes on to say that it was a popular tourist attraction previous to its shutdown. Because the travel takes less than an hour, day-trippers from Phuket would come by speedboat.
Maya Bay had an average of 5,000 visitors per day in 2018. A minister clarifies – “Maya Bay has piqued the curiosity of travelers from all around the globe. However, (the natural area) has deteriorated as a result of this, particularly the corals.” He is the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment. Maya Bay’s health has improved since the shutdown, he says. Thailand planned to reopen to international visitors after the epidemic by Christmas in August 2020.
Maya Bay’s reopening in Thailand is conditional.
The Thai government has published recommendations for the reopening of Maya Bay. One of them is a prohibition on vessels entering the bay. The boat drivers must drop off guests at a location that is not close to the famous cove.
The number of boats available at any one moment will be limited. There will be a total of eight speedboats. The trip would last one hour, with a maximum of 300 passengers each circuit. Daily hours would be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Water activities are scheduled to be ready for the reopening on January 1st. Snorkeling is permitted in defined zones at the front of the bay. In July 2018, Thailand made headlines after a group of teenagers were stranded for more than 15 days in an underground cave system. Their rescue enlisted the help of experts from across the globe and provided enough material for a Hollywood movie.
Maya Bay’s corals in Thailand were harmed.
The famous Maya Bay in Krabi province, according to Bangkok Post, closed its doors in June 2018.
Overtourism was to blame for the deterioration of coral reefs and the marine ecosystem. More than half of the corals, on a preliminary estimate, were severely damaged. Officials from the Park put coral on the reefs to restore the bay’s natural beauty. Global warming has put the corals of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in jeopardy. These reefs provide as habitat for marine life, and their extinction would result in ecological instability. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) intends to classify this reef as endangered.
