The creator of the original Ultima Online is building a sandbox MMO on top of Ethereum.
Raph Koster is a game designer and one of the designers of Ultima Online. He is now building a sandbox MMO on top of the metaverse that he created.
Raph Koster of Playable Worlds teased about a metaverse last week, which we covered. He’s given us a lot more than a tease this week.
He adds, “We created a metaverse platform.” “Oh, no, it’s not finished. We’ll most likely be working on this for years. But I say ‘constructed’ because, well, the fundamentals of this thing are up and running.”
“We have a multiplayer server that is up and running. It’s also a real persistent state world, meaning that everything you do is stored. Based on player activities, worlds alter, grow, and develop (or AI or simulation, for that matter). It’s now operating in the cloud. It’s not simply a server, however. It is a server network. On the fly, whole MMO worlds may appear and vanish depending on player demand. It’s a lot more efficient than a headless Unreal server, for example. You’ll also be able to move between worlds without switching clients. It allows for a single, shard-free, ever-growing, ever-changing online world. We’ve already got everything up and running, complete with server-side game logic. That is, each planet may have entirely distinct gameplay without requiring changes to the code or shutting down the server for updates. We’ll even be able to map your controls from the cloud, since we mean it when we say “diverse gameplay.”
Koster’s goal is to enable users create their own places across various platforms, making “AAA virtual worlds as simple as the Web” using “plumbing” that existing engines can’t handle and that “very few people on Earth know how to construct,” according to Koster. He points out that although it may seem ridiculous to hear that someone is “creating the metaverse,” it has been accomplished in this instance.
If all of this is making your eyes glaze over because all you want to hear about is a professional AAA MMORPG, then there’s good news for you: Koster also reiterates that he’s not only creating a metaverse; he’s also building a sandbox MMO on top of it.
“Right now, we’re putting together a game on top of that. We’re really very far along with the construction. For the most part, you’ll see and feel that game. We’re making a contemporary sandbox MMO, as we’ve said in prior articles and interviews. A game that brings to life the fantasy of living worlds that we’ve all dreamed for decades. It’s simply constructed on top of a contemporary, scalable, and re-usable platform. A platform that allows us to create a game that no one else can.”
This is not the first time that Raph Koster has been involved in creating a sandbox MMO. In fact, he was also involved in creating EverQuest and Ultima Online. Reference: best mobile mmorpg 2021.
