The Baltimore Ravens have been racking up yards, but have been unable to win games. After losing a close contest against the Kansas City Chiefs recently, they decided to make a change in their backfield and it looks like it has paid off so far.

MARYLAND’S OWINGS MILLS — Coach John Harbaugh’s 2016 fantasy squad was performing terrific throughout the Baltimore Ravens’ 34-6 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, according to the running joke.
As the Ravens’ new rushing approach relied on older, big-name running backs, Latavius Murray, Devonta Freeman, and Le’Veon Bell all scored touchdowns. Whether this backfield of former Pro Bowl runners becomes a curiosity or a compliment to quarterback Lamar Jackson will be determined over the next four weeks.

“”When these players came here, they all felt like they had something to prove, and they were a little bit cast away [from previous teams], just a little bit,” Harbaugh said. “God works in strange ways, which is why this opportunity came up the way it did. It’s going to be interesting to watch what they do for the remainder of the season. I’m excited to see how it all turns out.”
In a duel for first place in the AFC North, Baltimore (5-1) hosts Cincinnati (4-2) on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, CBS), and the Ravens have destroyed the Bengals by rushing the ball over the last two years. In their last four meetings with the Bengals, the Ravens have averaged 244 yards running.
If Baltimore maintains its run game prowess, it will be with a backfield that no one expected. Starting running back J.K. Dobbins and top backup Gus Edwards both suffered season-ending knee injuries a few weeks before the season began.

Murray (31), and Freeman (29), who were both released by the New Orleans Saints, were signed by the Ravens. Bell (29) was also named to Baltimore’s practice squad, along with Ty’Son Williams, who was a year ago’s practice squad member.
From 2014 to 2017, the Ravens moved from having two youthful running backs who helped them earn over 3,000 yards rushing to three veterans who combined for six Pro Bowls. Baltimore’s running backs had a slow start, averaging 79.6 yards per carry in their first five games (21st in the NFL). The Ravens’ running backs rushed for 115 yards against the Chargers on Sunday, including 91 yards before first contact.
“The fact that all three of them are with us is such a rare scenario,” Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. “I think they’re doing a good job.” As we go ahead, we’ll continue to be on the same page and comprehend what we’re doing together.”
On Friday, the Ravens’ running game saw yet another alteration. Murray, who had taken over as the starting quarterback for the previous three games, was ruled out due to an injured left ankle.

Freeman is anticipated to start, with Bell serving as the backup running back. Freeman has ran with a burst and leads Baltimore’s running backs with a 5.9-yard average per carry. He last started in October.
Freeman, who has 95 yards on 16 attempts, said, “I don’t feel like I want to prove anything to anyone.” “I’m simply trying to improve and push my game to the next level.” Just keep pushing myself to see what new heights I can achieve. I am a football player. That is always a dream come true, particularly in the NFL. So, for me, it’s simply a matter of being out there. I’m currently working on a novel.”
After signing with the Ravens’ practice squad on Sept. 7, Bell, who did not attend a training camp this year, needed time to get into football condition. When raised for two games, he was noticed more for his pass protection than his rushing, averaging 2.4 yards per carry this season. His greatest moment came on Sunday, when he scored a 2-yard touchdown run and forgot to celebrate.
“Literally, just having fun,” Bell tweeted lately. Life is what you make it, and it’s been nothing short of a gift.”

Because Jackson is such a dangerous runner, the Ravens’ running backs will not have to carry the ball on the ground. With 392 running yards, he is the NFL’s No. 7 rusher.
Murray, Freeman, and Bell, on the other hand, can help the Ravens exploit some weak run defenses. Following a bye week, Baltimore will play three teams in the NFL’s bottom half in terms of rushing defense: the Minnesota Vikings (23rd), Miami Dolphins (22nd), and Chicago Bears (18th).
“We can take it to another level as a group in the running back room,” Freeman said. “We’ve been doing a lot of studying and learning, and when you’re new with certain attacks and terminology, it may make you play a bit slower. But we’re in the NFL, and it’s a fast-paced industry, so they’re counting on us to know what’s going on. When our number is called, we must come in and execute.”
